About this event

The Midwife Assistant also known as birth assistant, is responsible for assisting the midwife during all aspects of midwifery care during out-of-hospital births including taking vital signs, fetal heart tones, administering medications, giving injections, charting/EMR, delivery of the neonate, treating postpartum hemorrhage, and assisting during sterile procedures like suturing.

T he class is tought by a licensed homebirth midwife.

T his course is appropriate for:

  • I ndividuals who wish to work professionally as a birth assistant
  • D oulas who want to expand their knowledge and skillset
  • B eginning direct-entry midwifery students who want to prepare for clinical placements (phase 1 or entering phase 2)
  • Nurses who want experience in a home-birth setting

D ay 1: Lecture and Discussion

  • H istory and issues in midwifery
  • B asic anatomy and physiology of birth
  • H IPAA and privacy
  • O SHA and universal precautions
  • C harting and medical terminology
  • V ital signs and taking fetal heart tones
  • A PGARS

D ay 2: Hands-on Skills Labs

  • V ital sings
  • Homebirth setup and breakdown
  • Administering medications
  • Estimating/quantifying blood loss
  • Sterile technique
  • B irth emergencies and transports basics
